Divers Alert Network - Project Dive Safety

Nekton Diving Cruises was the first live-aboard dive boat to participate as a Field
Data Collection Site for the Divers Alert Network (DAN) Project Dive Safety study.
Nekton Diving Cruises will provide you with free use of a downloadable dive computer
for participating in the Project Dive Safety study during your week of diving if
you volunteer*.
About DAN's Project Dive Safety
If your like an average responsible diver, you follow the dive tables (well, your
computer does). You make deeper dives first, stay less than 130 feet (40 meters).
You make safety stops. You don't hold your breath underwater. You make slow, controlled
ascents. But did you realize that many of the generally accepted guidelines for
safe diving are largely based on data from carefully controlled naval experiments
using ultra-fit Navy divers in top physical condition? How many of us "normal" recreational
divers can honestly say that we are "ultra-fit"?
Well DAN has wondered about the same question and has launched an extensive research
project to substantiate these safety limits with actual data provided by normal
recreational scuba divers such as you and me. The DAN scientists are interested
in finding out just where the "average" recreational diver's profile falls within
the accepted guidelines for safe diving. The goal of Project Dive Safety is to collect
lots of dive profiles.
In order to learn what an "average" recreational dive profile really is, volunteers
like you are asked to donate your profile by using a Nekton provided dive computer
that will record your dive profiles second by second. These reliable dive profiles
are uploaded by your dive-masters and sent to DAN where they will be compiled by
scientists to develop statistically sound profiles for normal recreational divers
like you and me.
In order to achieve their goal, DAN is recruiting and training a network of dive
boat operations, resorts, and live-aboards to become Field Data Collection Sites.
Dive operations around the world are volunteering their time and resources for this
worthwhile project and Nekton Diving Cruises is proud to not only be the first live-aboard
to participate, but over the years has collected the most dive profiles. You too
can be proud of your contribution to this important study when you participate in
the project. Your contribution will help the sport as a whole and help you develop
a better understanding of physiology of scuba diving and how it relates to you.

( * space is limited, volunteers are selected
onboard the ship at the beginning of the cruise week. Selection is by lottery if
the number of volunteers exceeds the number of spaces. The Nekton provided dive
computer may not be used as a primary computer or to plan dives, it is provided
solely to capture data for the DAN study)
